2024 News (Archived)

November 17:  Memorial Trial, Ioco, BC.

Twenty six riders came out to ride the Memorial Trial on November 17, 2024 at Ioco, BC.

A little bit of hail mixed with rain greeted riders but disappeared before the riders meeting.  So we got cool but mostly dry weather with well soaked ground to teach you throttle control. The Experts look to have had a couple of sections that they could not get through and the same sections made the Advanced riders struggle. The experts elected to punch 5’s for the 3rd loop as it was debatable if they would finish before dark. Steve Day squeaked the win by 1 point in Expert and Guy Smeeth did the same in Senior Advanced. Brian McNeal had a bit more of a gap to take Advanced.

Brad Guglielmi had a very reasonable 22 points in Intermediate which makes Billy D’s 10 points in Senior Intrmediate quite incredible. Steve Coates dragged the Bultaco down from Kelowna to show the way in Junior with only 4 points on the day.

Our thanks to Mountain Motorcycle for the sponsorship of this event and for the years of supporting trials in Canada.

October 20:  Moto Trials West Uhuru Trial, Ioco, BC.

Uhuru is a Swahili word meaning freedom. Thanks to Moto Trials West, the Uhuru Trial at Ioco on October 20, 2024 gave 18 riders the freedom to go play in the mud and get wet.  After a LOT of water on Saturday, Sunday dawned dry at first and later when a steady rain settled in, it did not matter because it was actually warm if you did not stop.

The 8th section was the trickiest one for the Intermediate riders with a tight turn into a root or rock or both. The few cleans there were well earned.  Etienne and Emily worked at it in Intermediate with only 3 points separating them in the end. Roy took Senior Intermediate thanks to Skip fiving the last section.

Alex Le took Expert with less than half the points of the next rider. Parker Degray took 43 points in Advanced and Guy Smeeth was 2 points more in Senior Advanced 45.

Thanks to the Vertigo importer Moto Trials West for their sponsorship of this event.  Don Doerksen

October 6: Fall Classic Trial, Ioco, BC.

A dozen classic bikes and riders showed up for the Fall Classic Trial on October 6 at Ioco, B.C. There were 16 other riders in the Intermediate and Junior classes.

The weather was cool and dry but it had rained on previous days so conditions were classic for the Wet Coast. The mud hole in the first section was the big points taker on the day.  A good ride through that set you up for the rest of the loop but good rides were few and far between in that section. The Classic classes run on no-stop rules which made a sneak route around the hole not a viable choice.

Paul Marander only took one point in the hole all day to win Classic A and Bob Clark only took one point all day to win Classic B. Roy Anderson and Ian Carlson took the majority of their points at section one but went on to win Senior Intermediater and Intermediate respectively.  Brett Clark also lost most of his points at section one but came out the best in Sportsman.

September 15, Iron Mountain Trial, Mission, BC.

The trials thirst after a summer of no trials brought out 28 riders to Iron Mountain in Mission on September 15, 2024. They were greeted by the kind of weather that every trials rider prays for. It was cool at first but the sun came out to bring the perfect temperature. A few riders mentioned that the rain from a few days earlier brought slippery conditions that they were not used to after a dry summer.  So the scores were a little higher than expected, although some riders (looking at their scores) did not seem bothered.

With a few of our top riders away at the TDN, Steve Day was the Cream of the crop in Expert and Sawyer Collie cruised through all but section 8 to win Advanced and his father (Cam) topped Senior Advanced. Richard Ouellet had 3 good loops and one bad to win Intermediate and Skip Parker did the same in Senior Intermediate. Only one Junior showed up and Asher Orlov soldiered on to finish well.

June 9:  Beta Canada Trial, Ioco, BC.

The ninth day of June 2024 started out cloudy but cleared up quickly for a perfect day to ride in the Beta Canada Trial at Ioco. Thirty seven riders took on some challenging or tricky sections with some high scores along the way.  The Intermediate riders were particularly challenged with tight corners that rewarded good balance and precise steering.  The Expert class was owned by Alex Le who took half the points of his nearest competitor.  Jason Miller snuck up from the USA to take Advanced and Paul Marander had the best overall Advanced score to win Senior Advanced.   Emily and Catrina battled it out in the all girl Intermediate Classl and were still smiling at the end of the day.  The very competitive old guys in the Senior Intermediate class had a surprising number of dabs and a very good time, with Peter Falk taking the no.1 plaque back to Vancouver Island.

Our thanks to Beta Canada for their kind sponsorship and thanks to Greg and Bernard for all their work.

May 26:  Whistler Trial, (Sticks and Stones) Whistler, BC

It looked like a gloomy day in May for the CPTA Whistler trial on May 26, 2024, but 44 riders showed up for the ride.  The rain never really materialized and conditions were consistent all day.  The last trial that I went to in Whistler was 1981 (I think) so it was great to get back there and ride where I have never ridden before.  It looks like the Experts were having a hard time finding cleans but it was a little easier on the other classes.  Alex Le won Expert handily and Brian McNeal downshifted to ride Advanced for the win.  Intermediate was the massive class with Shawn Steinbarhen topping the bunch and Billy D in Senior Intermediate had the best Intermediate score of the day.    Don Doerksen

Event News:

February 24/25 Ladies Prospect Trials:

Christy Williams Richards hosted a two day women only two day event.  It is great to see our sport attracting a diverse membership and the development of our female riders is quite amazing.

March 17:  TRS Motorcycles Canada Trial, Ioco, BC.

If you were at Ioco for the 7th annual TRS Motorcycles Canada Trial on March 17, you probably thought that winter was long gone. Blue skies and twenty degrees were the order of the day. The rapidly drying conditions made for lots of traction and lower than expected scores. Basically, it was perfect for our first full trial of the year and 47 riders showed up to enjoy it. A few riders tried out the Advanced class for the first time and this was a great day for that.

Sean Bird took a five on the first loop and only 1 point after that to clinch a close race for the win.   Sam Minchington and Andrew Deboer took Advanced and Senior Advanced, respectively,  with very miserly rides. Willy Westwood won Intermediate and Roy Anderson won Senior Intermediate with lots of competitors in that class. Andrew Keleher was best in Junior and Pierce McNeal rode a twin shock Yamaha to be best in Sportsman.

Spring Classic Trial

April 7th was a great day to take out your old twinshock trials bike and see if you still remember how to ride it.  It was the Spring Classic at Ioco, BC.  The weather did not cooperate as the rain stopped before we started riding, so that part was not classic. Sean Bird set the trial out and then took off to Australia so we could not yell at him. Peirce McNeal cleaned the last loop on a TY250 with a 360 motor in it, so the sections were not too bad. Bob Clark won Classic B and BillyD (83 yr) proved that old still works by topping the Senior Intermediate class, Kevlar Dupuis won Intermediate and Fei Wang took Junior. It was a good days riding and it is always a pleasure to see the old iron doing what they were intended for.

TWO EVENTS on MARCH 3!

Spring Small Wheel Trial: March 3 at Ioco, BC

Ted Blow is the host and has set up easy, fun sections for the kids.  If you want to help out Ted is looking for checkers and someone to man the barbecue.  Hot dogs and pops are on the menu.

Spring Women’s Trial: March 3 at Ioco, BC

Back to back fun for Women at Ioco.  Following a successful (although a bit damp) two-day prospect camp hosted by Christy, Jaclyn Delacroix is hosting her Spring Women’s Trial at Ioco.  Ladies, do not miss out on this event.  Enjoy competition at its best with sections to challenge both Junior and Intermediate level riders.

Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy the day.  You can help with the kids or check out the action with the Women’s Trial.  It’s impressive how quickly our ladies are advancing.   Bring along a few dollars to donate to the barbecue.  Free for participants and helpers!

Hello ladies!

THIS IS HAPPENING!!!

Feb 24-25 weekend I am Clerk of the Course for a two day competition for ladies in the Junior and Intermediate classes.  (There won’t be a novice line, and there may be a few sections with splits that are harder than intermediate to spice things up).  There will be 7 sections ridden for 4 loops.  The same loop will be ridden both days (mostly), but the sections will be new for each day.  You can ride one or both days; the events are not part of a championship, and do not count for CPTA points.  Sign up each day.  (Let me know if you can or can’t make it by reply… I’d like to have an idea of numbers.)

The event will be held at ioco, in Port Moody.  (Map on the website, www.trialsbc.com.  If you haven’t been, ioco is AMAZING).  Standard CPTA rules and procedures will run this event.  Event will be group check scoring.  Sign up at 9:30 am, riders meeting at 10am.  Event entry is $20, non-member is $30.  2024 memberships are in place, I’ll likely be able to sign up new members.  No camping at the event, unfortunately.

One goal of this competition is for ladies who are interested in the TdN (this coming year or future years) to be able to compete against each other head to head.  Riding this event is not required for the TdN, but the committee does consider head to head results in team selection.  We are also trying to make a TdN program where we can follow lady riders and watch for up and coming team members in lower classes.  Interest in the TdN is not required for this event; another goal is to encourage and level up women’s trials in Canada, and competition is a large part of that, regardless of the TdN.  The more women who compete, the more the level of skill will increase.  Following that idea, riders from all over (ie: not Canada) will also be welcome… come and be awesome!

There will not be a novice line at this event.  However, if you are a novice, and enjoy a trail ride, the loop is not long, and covers mostly the CPTA Junior loop and small wheel loop.  It might be nice to come and see what is up, add to the stoke, and meet some fellow lady riders.  The March 3 Ladies Trial will have a Novice line, for those who want to test their newer skills and have a good time; it will be a one day event.  The May 4-5 Extravaganza is open for all skill levels (as long as you have about 3 rides on the bike… I haven’t nailed down a very beginner instructor for never-ridden-before ladies, but I’m looking).  The Extravaganza will have all sorts of activities taking place… skills clinics and trail rides and a mini competition (possibly a team competition!) and prizes and fun; you will be able to sign up for one or both days.

Let me know if you have any questions about this event (or any event), or even let me know if you are or aren’t able to make it.  I’d like to have an idea of who is coming, and I haven’t heard from many of you in a while, so just say hi!

Thanks, Christy
